Bodies change, deal with it

I honestly don’t know where we got the idea that our bodies are not supposed to change but I’m confident being on the hamster wheel of dieting, shredding and shedding, has watered it until it's grown roots all up in our subconscious.

I don't need to tell you just how smart the body us, but maybe you need to be reminded that like any other living creature it will always aim to survive first and thrive later, in whatever the environment it finds itself in.

So, when the body senses threat, it’s going to flip into fight first mode and when it deems the situation non-threatening, it’s going to switch into rest and relax mode.

This means that as the seasons of your life change, your body (because it senses threat or treat) is likely to change with it to - you guessed it - survive first and thrive later.

A new or different season may look like:

  • job/career change

  • increased family responsibilities

  • financial struggles or gains

  • pregnancy or postpartum

  • peri-menopause or menopause

  • injury or illness

  • season (i.e. weather) change

Yet, rather than understand and adapt (your mindset, movement, nutrition, daily practices) to meet your body where it is at in any given season, it's not uncommon for you to worry more about how your body is changing or has changed, and try everything to get it back or prevent it from doing so.

I don't know about you, but for me, this got exhausting.

My advice...lean ALL the way in. I feel like this is my running advice every year around this time.

If you're in the season of not wanting to cook, lean in to using pre-prepared or low fuss foods so you don't have to. It still counts.

If you're in the season of not wanting to go to the gym, lean in to doing workouts at home in your living room, barefoot and in your pj's. It still counts.

If you're in the season of dealing with injury, lean in to doing (and celebrating) the little things you can do. It does count.

If you're in the season of low motivation, lean in to doing the bare minimum so you still have momentum. It still counts.

And if your body changes during those season, guess what, it was meant to.

Not because you don't care for your body, but because you're choosing to care for it in the best way possible IN that season.

Your body is not the enemy, but how you think about it is.
